What Mattered
Aviator 1 is a former commercial building converted to residential use in Addlestone, Surrey. The external spaces needed a clear landscape enhancement strategy that could restore existing soft landscape areas, improve the building setting and better support day-to-day use. The process was deliberately streamlined. Rather than following a typical full RIBA stage sequence, the work combined landscape enhancement proposals with light technical design, giving the contractor enough clarity to price and build the works.
What Changed
Landscape Ally developed sitewide landscape enhancement proposals for the existing external spaces around Aviator 1. The strategy combined landscape management and maintenance principles with targeted improvements to hard and soft landscape areas. A new entrance courtyard became the focus of the resident arrival experience. The design created a more welcoming first impression for the residential building, while also providing an informal external space for residents to sit, pause and relax.
Why It Helped
The entrance courtyard proposals resolved several technical constraints without adding unnecessary complexity. Varying threshold levels, slab build-up, structural limitations and drainage considerations were addressed through a simple planter-led landscape approach. Metal planter systems, often used in roof garden design, provided an efficient way to introduce planting and small trees above the existing slab. This supported a greener and higher-quality courtyard while keeping construction interfaces simple, cost-effective and practical to deliver.
The fast-tracked package reduced design complexity and limited the number of construction interfaces. This helped the contractor price the works with confidence and move towards delivery without compromising the quality of the landscape response.
Sitewide Landscape Enhancements
The plan provided a clear contractor reference for targeted landscape improvements across the external spaces serving the converted residential building.
Residential Entrance Courtyard
The entrance space, which was modelled in BIM, was designed to create a clearer and more welcoming arrival experience for residents.
Planter-led Technical Approach
Prefabricated metal planters provided a cost- and time-efficient way to manage level changes between varying entrance thresholds, while supporting a clear and buildable courtyard layout.
Contractor pricing package
The design was developed with enough technical clarity to support pricing and construction.
